Overview

This combination regimen consists of the chemotherapy agents gemcitabine and cisplatin administered concurrently with image-guided intensity modulated radiation therapy (IG-IMRT). Developed and studied by the University of California, San Diego, specifically for the treatment of locally advanced cervical carcinoma, the regimen aims to utilize the radiosensitizing properties of both gemcitabine and cisplatin. Gemcitabine is a nucleoside analog that interferes with DNA synthesis by inhibiting ribonucleotide reductase and competing for incorporation into DNA, while cisplatin is a platinum-based agent that creates inter- and intra-strand DNA cross-links. The use of IMRT is intended to reduce gastrointestinal and hematologic toxicity compared to conventional radiation, potentially allowing for higher doses of concurrent chemotherapy to be delivered safely.
