Overview

A sequential chemotherapy regimen consisting of gemcitabine followed by vinorelbine, specifically investigated by the National Cancer Center, Korea, for the treatment of metastatic or recurrent breast cancer. Gemcitabine is a nucleoside metabolic inhibitor that functions as a pyrimidine antimetabolite, inhibiting DNA synthesis by targeting ribonucleoside-diphosphate reductase and being incorporated into DNA. Vinorelbine is a semi-synthetic vinca alkaloid that inhibits mitosis by binding to tubulin and preventing microtubule assembly. This sequential approach was evaluated in a Phase II clinical trial to compare its efficacy and safety profile against concurrent combination therapy in patients previously treated with anthracyclines and taxanes.
