Overview

This is a combination chemotherapy regimen consisting of gemcitabine, vinorelbine, and filgrastim (G-CSF), often abbreviated as VGF. It is used as a salvage therapy for patients with relapsed or refractory Hodgkin lymphoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Gemcitabine is a nucleoside analog that inhibits DNA synthesis by inhibiting ribonucleotide reductase and by being incorporated into DNA, leading to chain termination. Vinorelbine is a vinca alkaloid that binds to tubulin and inhibits microtubule polymerization, resulting in cell cycle arrest in the M-phase. Filgrastim is a recombinant granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) that stimulates the production, maturation, and activation of neutrophils to reduce the incidence and duration of chemotherapy-induced neutropenia. This specific outpatient-based approach was evaluated by Bayside Health in a risk-adjusted Phase II study to provide an effective, lower-toxicity alternative to more intensive inpatient salvage regimens for heavily pre-treated patients.
