Otomax is a veterinary otic ointment indicated for the treatment of acute and chronic otitis externa in dogs. It is a fixed-dose combination product containing three active ingredients: gentamicin sulfate, betamethasone valerate, and clotrimazole. Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that provides bactericidal activity by binding to the bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis. Betamethasone valerate is a synthetic corticosteroid that exerts anti-inflammatory and antipruritic effects by activating the glucocorticoid receptor. Clotrimazole is an imidazole antifungal agent that inhibits the enzyme lanosterol 14-alpha demethylase, leading to the depletion of ergosterol and disruption of fungal cell membrane integrity. Developed by Schering-Plough and now marketed by Merck Animal Health, Otomax is effective against common canine ear pathogens, including *Malassezia pachydermatis*, *Staphylococcus aureus*, and *Pseudomonas aeruginosa*.
