Gentamicin + cefazolin is a combination of two antibiotics used together for their synergistic antibacterial effects. Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, leading to cell death. Cefazolin is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, resulting in cell lysis and death. The combination has been shown to be synergistic against certain bacteria, including enterococci and Escherichia coli, making it useful in treating severe infections where broad-spectrum coverage or enhanced efficacy is needed[1][2][9]. This combination has been studied for use in surgical prophylaxis (such as cardiac surgery), prevention of infection in open fractures, and treatment of serious infections when monotherapy may be insufficient[4][8]. Both drugs are administered parenterally.
