Overview

Gentamicin + clindamycin is an antibiotic combination being evaluated as an intraoperative irrigation solution during laparoscopic appendectomy for pediatric patients with perforated appendicitis. Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that primarily targets Gram-negative bacteria by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis. Clindamycin is a lincosamide antibiotic that targets Gram-positive and anaerobic bacteria by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. This combination is used as a local rinse to reduce the bacterial load within the peritoneal cavity and at the surgical site, with the goal of decreasing the incidence of postoperative wound infections and intra-abdominal abscesses (IAA).
