Drug intelligence / Profile preview
A combination antibiotic therapy that demonstrates synergistic activity against various bacterial infections. Penicillin, a beta-lactam antibiotic, inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, increasing cell wall permeability. This enhanced permeability facilitates the entry of gentamicin, an aminoglycoside that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis. This combined action leads to enhanced bactericidal activity and is particularly valuable in treating serious infections such as enterococcal endocarditis, meningitis, neonatal sepsis, and severe respiratory infections. It also shows effectiveness against Group B streptococcal and Pseudomonas infections.
