This drug is a fixed-dose combination of two antibiotics—gentamicin and procaine benzylpenicillin (also known as penicillin G procaine)—used primarily for the treatment of severe bacterial infections in neonates and young infants when hospital referral is not possible. Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, leading to cell death. Procaine benzylpenicillin is a long-acting form of penicillin G combined with the local anesthetic procaine; it acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding to penicillin-binding proteins.
