Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This is a fixed-dose combination drug containing gentamicin (an aminoglycoside antibiotic) and diclofenac (a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, NSAID). It is primarily formulated as eye drops for the postoperative management of inflammation and infection following ocular surgery such as cataract extraction. Gentamicin acts by binding to the 30S subunit of bacterial ribosomes, inhibiting protein synthesis and exerting bactericidal effects against a broad range of Gram-negative bacteria. Diclofenac inhibits cyclooxygenase-1 and -2 enzymes (COX-1/COX-2), reducing prostaglandin synthesis responsible for pain, inflammation, and fever. The combination provides both antimicrobial protection against postoperative infections and anti-inflammatory action to control ocular inflammation. Studies have also shown that this combination can exhibit synergistic antibacterial effects in vitro against pathogens like Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Listeria monocytogenes[1][3][5].
