Drug intelligence / Profile preview
ghrelin + growth hormone is a recombinant peptide/protein combination therapy being developed by TheraSource LLC for the treatment of sepsis and septic shock, particularly in elderly patients. The therapy addresses the hyporesponsiveness to ghrelin observed in aged septic subjects by using growth hormone to upregulate the expression of the ghrelin receptor (growth hormone secretagogue receptor 1a, GHSR-1a). This restoration of receptor expression allows ghrelin to exert its anti-inflammatory and immune-modulatory effects, which include reducing systemic inflammation (IL-6, TNF-α) and preventing T cell apoptosis. In preclinical models of sepsis, the combination significantly improved survival rates and attenuated markers of organ injury.
