Overview
ginger + ibuprofen is a combination product developed by Ferrosan AS, consisting of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) ibuprofen and an extract of ginger (Zingiber officinale). It was investigated for the treatment of chronic back pain to improve joint health and quality of life. Ibuprofen functions as a non-selective inhibitor of cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2), which reduces the synthesis of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins. Ginger contains bioactive compounds such as gingerols and shogaols that are believed to inhibit both the cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase (5-LOX) pathways, potentially offering a synergistic anti-inflammatory effect. The combination was evaluated in a Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT00445757) over a 12-week period.
