Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ginkgo biloba + trazodone is a non-standard combination of a dietary supplement (ginkgo biloba) and a pharmaceutical antidepressant (trazodone). Ginkgo biloba is an herbal extract commonly used for cognitive enhancement, memory support, and circulatory disorders. Its mechanism involves antioxidant activity, modulation of neurotransmitter systems (including serotonin and dopamine), inhibition of platelet-activating factor, and possible effects on blood flow. Trazodone is a serotonin antagonist and reuptake inhibitor (SARI) prescribed primarily for depression, insomnia, and anxiety; it acts by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin in the brain while antagonizing certain serotonin receptors. The combination has been reported to increase the risk of serious central nervous system side effects such as drowsiness, ataxia, or even coma—especially in elderly patients—due to potential pharmacodynamic interactions that may enhance serotonergic or sedative effects[1][3][5][6][7][8]. This combination should only be used under close medical supervision.
