Ginkgo biloba extract + tetramethylpyrazine sodium chloride (marketed as Xingqiong) is a fixed-dose combination intravenous pharmaceutical product widely used in China for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke and coronary heart disease. It combines the neuroprotective and antioxidant properties of Ginkgo biloba extract (containing flavonoids and terpene lactones like ginkgolides) with the vasodilatory and antiplatelet effects of tetramethylpyrazine (also known as ligustrazine), an alkaloid originally isolated from the herb Ligusticum wallichii. The combination works synergistically to inhibit platelet-activating factor (PAF) receptors, scavenge free radicals, and block calcium channels, thereby improving cerebral microcirculation and reducing neuronal damage following ischemic events. The First Hospital of China Medical University has been a key institution in conducting large-scale Phase 4 clinical trials to evaluate its efficacy and safety in stroke populations.
