Overview

Ginsenoside Compound K (CK) is a rare ginsenoside and the primary bioactive metabolite of protopanaxadiol-type ginsenosides (such as Rb1 and Rb2) produced by intestinal microbiota. It is recognized for its superior bioavailability and diverse pharmacological activities, including potent anti-obesity, anti-diabetic, and anti-inflammatory effects. Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host, primarily through the modulation of the gut microbiome. The combination of CK and probiotics is an investigational therapeutic strategy developed by researchers at the Xiangya School of Stomatology, Central South University, to combat overweight and obesity. This combination aims to leverage the synergistic effects of CK's metabolic regulation—mediated through the activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and the modulation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-gamma)—and the probiotics' ability to restore gut microbial balance, enhance intestinal barrier integrity, and reduce systemic metabolic endotoxemia. The intervention is currently being evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials to determine its impact on body weight, fat distribution, and metabolic markers in overweight individuals.
