GlicoPro + hydroxypropyl-methylcellulose is a combination ophthalmic formulation used as an artificial tear substitute for the treatment of dry eye disease (DED). Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (also known as hypromellose or HPMC) is a semisynthetic, inert, viscoelastic polymer that acts as a lubricant and tear film stabilizer. It promotes corneal wetting by stabilizing and thickening the precorneal tear film, prolonging its breakdown time, and protecting the ocular surface from dryness[1][7][10]. GlicoPro is described as a multimolecular complex based on proteins, sulfured and unsulfured glycosaminoglycans, and opiorphin. The addition of GlicoPro to HPMC enhances anti-inflammatory effects by significantly decreasing inflammatory markers such as cytokines (IL-20, IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-6, IL-8), MMP-9, and MCP-1 in both in vitro models and clinical studies[4]. Clinical trials have shown that this combination improves symptoms of dry eye disease more effectively than HPMC alone by increasing tear film stability and reducing ocular surface inflammation[2][4].
