Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Kailime (also marketed as Kailim or K-ril M) is a fixed-dose combination oral antihyperglycemic medication approved in South Korea for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It combines glimepiride, a third-generation sulfonylurea, with metformin hydrochloride, a biguanide. Glimepiride lowers blood glucose by stimulating insulin release from functioning pancreatic beta cells via ATP-sensitive potassium channel inhibition. Metformin hydrochloride reduces blood glucose levels by inhibiting hepatic gluconeogenesis, reducing intestinal glucose absorption, and enhancing peripheral insulin sensitivity. This combination provides complementary therapeutic pathways to optimize glycemic control in patients whose blood sugar is inadequately managed by monotherapy.
