Overview

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (9-36) is the primary metabolite of the incretin hormone GLP-1 (7-36) amide, formed by the enzymatic action of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4). While it was historically considered an inactive metabolite due to its lack of insulinotropic effect, recent studies have highlighted its potential cardiovascular benefits. Specifically, it is being investigated for its ability to improve coronary microcirculation and endothelial function in patients with obesity and coronary microvascular dysfunction. These effects appear to be mediated through a mechanism that is independent of the canonical Glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor (GLP-1R), suggesting the existence of alternative signaling pathways in the vascular endothelium.
