Glucose-bicarbonate-Ringer Lactate (GBRL) is an intraocular irrigating solution specifically formulated for use during ophthalmic procedures, such as phacoemulsification cataract surgery. The solution is composed of a Ringer's Lactate base enriched with glucose (dextrose) and sodium bicarbonate to more closely approximate the physiological composition of the aqueous humor. Its primary function is to maintain the structural and functional integrity of the corneal endothelium and other intraocular tissues during surgery. The glucose component provides an essential energy source for the metabolic requirements of endothelial cells, while the bicarbonate acts as a buffer to maintain a stable physiological pH. By providing these nutrients and maintaining a stable environment, GBRL aims to minimize corneal endothelial cell loss and postoperative corneal edema compared to standard irrigating solutions.
