Overview

glucose + glucagon-University Hospital, Gentofte, Copenhagen is a research intervention used in a mechanistic clinical study (NCT02010827) to investigate the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). It consists of the administration of glucose, typically via an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) or isoglycemic intravenous infusion, in combination with a continuous intravenous infusion of glucagon (0.8 ng/kg/min). The study was designed to simulate the lack of postprandial glucagon suppression observed in diabetic patients to determine its impact on endogenous glucose production. Glucagon acts as an agonist at the glucagon receptor to stimulate hepatic glucose output, while glucose serves as both a metabolic substrate and a stimulus for insulin secretion. This intervention is primarily used for physiological research rather than as a therapeutic product.
