Overview

GIK-University of Monastir-acute coronary syndrome refers to a specific metabolic support therapy protocol evaluated in the GIKI2 clinical trial conducted by the University of Monastir. This intervention consists of an intravenous infusion of 10% glucose, rapid-acting insulin, and potassium chloride, often administered alongside intensive insulin therapy. The therapy is designed to provide cardioprotection during acute coronary syndrome (ACS) by shifting myocardial metabolism from the oxidation of free fatty acids to the more oxygen-efficient utilization of glucose. By reducing circulating free fatty acids and providing a direct energy substrate, the GIK protocol aims to limit myocardial injury and improve clinical outcomes in patients with ischemic heart disease. Results from the Phase 3 GIKI2 trial suggested potential benefits in reducing major cardiovascular events at one year in patients with non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome.
