Overview

Glucose + potassium chloride + sodium chloride is a hypotonic intravenous maintenance fluid solution used to treat or prevent dehydration and electrolyte imbalances in hospitalized pediatric patients. It is a combination of three active ingredients: glucose, which serves as an energy source; sodium chloride, which provides sodium and chloride electrolytes; and potassium chloride, which provides potassium. This formulation is designed to maintain fluid and electrolyte homeostasis, specifically plasma sodium, potassium, and glucose levels, in acutely ill children requiring intravenous fluid therapy. In a Phase 4 randomized controlled trial (NCT02926989) conducted by Oulu University Hospital, this hypotonic solution was evaluated as a comparator against an isotonic fluid (Plasma-Lyte Glucose 5%) to assess the risk of hypokalemia, hyponatremia, and other fluid-related outcomes.
