Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Dextrose + NaCl is a parenteral intravenous fluid combination consisting of glucose (dextrose) and sodium chloride (normal saline). In the clinical context of obstetric care, it is administered intravenously to women undergoing induction of labor. The rationale for its use is that glucose serves as the primary energy substrate for the uterine muscle (myometrium); supplementing it parenterally is hypothesized to improve uterine contractility and thereby shorten the duration of labor. This combination is a standard, non-proprietary intravenous solution used for hydration and caloric support. Its efficacy in labor induction has been investigated in randomized controlled trials, such as those conducted by Suez Canal University, specifically focusing on multiparous women.
