Overview

Glutamate + aspartate is a combination of two naturally occurring amino acids, glutamic acid (glutamate) and aspartic acid (aspartate). Both are classified as excitatory amino acids and serve critical roles in cellular metabolism, neurotransmission, and protein synthesis. In the nervous system, both act as neurotransmitters—most notably glutamate, which is the primary excitatory neurotransmitter in vertebrates. Aspartate also has excitatory properties but is less potent than glutamate. Experimental studies have shown that when administered together to neuromuscular tissue (such as lobster muscle fibers), they can induce membrane depolarization more effectively than either alone due to cooperative or synergistic interactions at receptor sites. This synergy may be due to increased affinity of glutamate for its receptors in the presence of aspartate or through summation effects at postsynaptic membranes[1][2]. In animal nutrition research, supplementation with both amino acids (often alongside glutamine) supports intestinal barrier function and energy homeostasis[5]. There are no known pharmaceutical products marketed specifically under this combination for human use; their main uses are nutritional or experimental.
