Overview

glutamine + azulene sodium sulfonate is a fixed-dose combination small molecule therapeutic consisting of the amino acid L-glutamine and the anti-inflammatory agent azulene sodium sulfonate. L-glutamine acts as a metabolic precursor for the synthesis of hexosamine and mucin, which are essential components for the repair and maintenance of the gastric mucosal epithelium. Azulene sodium sulfonate, a water-soluble derivative of azulene, exerts direct anti-inflammatory effects on the gastrointestinal mucosa by inhibiting the release of inflammatory mediators and promoting the formation of granulation tissue. Originally developed by Kotobuki Pharmaceutical as MARZULENE-S, the combination is approved for the treatment of gastric ulcers, duodenal ulcers, and various forms of gastritis. It has also been investigated for its potential to mitigate chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis due to its mucosal protective and regenerative properties.
