Overview

Glutamine-supplemented Ringer's Lactate is an investigational intravenous resuscitation fluid developed by researchers at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, for the treatment of trauma patients suffering from hemorrhagic shock. The formulation consists of a standard Ringer's Lactate solution—an isotonic crystalloid containing sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, and lactate—enriched with 3% glutamine (approximately 21 mmol/L). Glutamine is an essential amino acid that serves as a primary metabolic fuel for rapidly dividing cells, such as immune cells and enterocytes, and acts as a precursor for the potent antioxidant glutathione. In the context of acute trauma and shock, this supplementation is intended to attenuate the systemic inflammatory response by modulating the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (including TNF-alpha, IL-1β, and IL-6) and to enhance cellular energy recovery during the critical initial phase of resuscitation.
