Overview

Glycerin + hypromellose + polyethylene glycol is a combination topical ophthalmic lubricant solution used as artificial tears for the treatment of dry eye disease and ocular surface irritation. The formulation contains three active demulcents: glycerin, hypromellose (a cellulose-based polymer), and polyethylene glycol (typically PEG 400). These components work synergistically to supplement the natural tear film, increase the viscosity of the solution for prolonged contact time, and provide a protective moisture barrier on the ocular surface. This mechanical action helps to relieve symptoms such as burning, stinging, and foreign body sensation caused by environmental factors or decreased tear production. It is available over-the-counter (OTC) under various brand names, including Visine and Systane variants.
