Overview

Glycerin + lidocaine + epinephrine is a compounded sclerosing solution developed and studied by the dermatology practice Goldman, Butterwick, Fitzpatrick and Groff (Cosmetic Laser Dermatology) for the treatment of leg telangiectasias. Glycerin serves as the primary sclerosing agent, acting as a mild irritant that causes dehydration of endothelial cells, leading to vessel thrombosis and eventual fibrosis. Lidocaine is included as a local anesthetic to mitigate the stinging sensation associated with glycerin injection. Epinephrine is added as a vasoconstrictor to induce localized vessel contraction, which may theoretically increase the contact time of the sclerosant with the vessel wall and reduce post-procedural ecchymosis. This specific combination was evaluated in a randomized, split-body clinical trial to compare its efficacy and safety against glycerin with lidocaine alone.
