Overview

This combination is a specialized oral rehydration solution (ORS) designed to enhance fluid absorption and systemic fluid retention. Glycerol acts as an osmotic agent that promotes a state of hyperhydration by increasing the osmotic pressure of body fluids, which in turn reduces free water clearance by the kidneys. The carbohydrate component, typically glucose or maltodextrin, facilitates the active transport of sodium and water across the intestinal epithelium via the sodium-glucose cotransporter 1 (SGLT1). The electrolytes, including sodium, potassium, chloride, and citrate, replace essential ions lost during dehydration and maintain plasma volume. This solution is primarily used for the prevention and treatment of dehydration, particularly in scenarios where prolonged fluid retention is beneficial, such as in sports medicine, heat-related illness, or perioperative fluid management.
