Glycerol + electrolyte solution is an intravenous osmotic dehydrating agent primarily used to reduce intracranial pressure (ICP) and intraocular pressure (IOP). The glycerol component increases plasma osmolality, creating an osmotic gradient that draws water from the extravascular space—such as brain parenchyma or aqueous humor—into the intravascular space. The inclusion of electrolytes, typically sodium chloride, serves to maintain systemic osmotic balance and prevent the electrolyte imbalances that can occur with pure osmotic diuresis. This combination is frequently utilized in the management of cerebral edema associated with stroke, trauma, or neurosurgery, as well as in the emergency treatment of acute glaucoma.
