Glycerol + heparin is a combination of two agents with distinct mechanisms and clinical uses. Glycerol (also known as glycerin) is a hyperosmolar agent primarily used to reduce cerebral edema in acute stroke and other conditions by drawing water out of tissues, thereby decreasing intracranial pressure[2]. Heparin is an anticoagulant that potentiates the activity of antithrombin III, inhibiting thrombin and factor Xa to prevent clot formation[3][4][6]. This combination does not represent a standard fixed-dose pharmaceutical product but may be co-administered in certain clinical scenarios where both reduction of edema (glycerol) and prevention or treatment of thrombosis (heparin) are desired. Notably, there is evidence that intravenous nitroglycerin (glyceryl trinitrate), which shares structural similarity with glycerol but has different pharmacology, can reduce the anticoagulant effect of heparin when administered together; however, direct interaction data for plain glycerol plus heparin are limited[1][5][7][9].
