Glycerol + saline is a control infusion used in mechanistic clinical research, specifically in studies conducted by Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU). It serves as a metabolic control during hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp procedures to isolate the effects of fatty acid oxidation on insulin sensitivity. In these studies, it is compared against Intralipid (a lipid emulsion) to determine how defects in mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation pathways—such as very long-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (VLCAD), long-chain 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase (LCHAD), and medium-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (MCAD) deficiencies—influence insulin resistance. The infusion consists of glycerol and saline and is not intended as a therapeutic pharmaceutical product but as a research tool to account for the glycerol component of lipid emulsions.
