Overview

Glyceryl eicosapentaenoate (GEPA) is a synthetic monoacylglycerol derivative of the omega-3 fatty acid eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Developed by Mimetica (a subsidiary of Nippon Zoki Pharmaceutical), GEPA is a topical small molecule designed to treat inflammatory skin conditions, primarily acne vulgaris. It acts as a stable delivery vehicle for EPA, which is released upon application to the skin. EPA exerts its therapeutic effects by inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-8 (IL-8) and leukotriene B4 (LTB4), and by demonstrating antimicrobial activity against *Cutibacterium acnes*. The specific combination of a serum and a cream formulation (such as Cream B) has been evaluated in clinical trials to optimize the delivery of the active ingredient to the pilosebaceous unit and improve clinical outcomes in patients with moderate-to-severe acne.
