Granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) and erythropoietin (EPO) is a combination therapy involving two hematopoietic growth factors. G-CSF stimulates the bone marrow to produce neutrophils, increasing white blood cell counts and reducing infection risk, especially after chemotherapy or in cases of neutropenia. Erythropoietin stimulates red blood cell production by acting on erythroid progenitor cells in the bone marrow. The combination has been studied for synergistic effects in various conditions including myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), where it can improve anemia and reduce transfusion needs, as well as for neuroprotection and functional recovery after stroke. Clinical studies have shown that this combination can safely elevate both white and red blood cell counts without major adverse events[1][2].
