Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Green tea extract + metformin is a combination of a botanical dietary supplement (green tea extract) and a pharmaceutical drug (metformin). Green tea extract contains polyphenols, primarily epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, lipid-lowering, and glucose-modulating effects. Metformin is an oral antihyperglycemic agent widely used for type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance; it acts mainly by activating AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), reducing hepatic glucose production, improving insulin sensitivity, and modulating inflammatory pathways. The combination has been studied in overweight women with insulin resistance or metabolic syndrome to assess synergistic or additive effects on glycemic control, lipid profile improvement, oxidative stress reduction, inflammation modulation (notably IL-6), and weight management. However, clinical studies indicate that while both agents individually improve certain metabolic parameters—such as fasting glucose reduction by green tea extract and body weight reduction by metformin—their combined use may nullify some individual benefits due to drug-nutrient interactions affecting cytokine responses[1][2][4]. Experimental nanodrug formulations combining EGCG with metformin are also being explored for enhanced bioavailability and potential anticancer synergy[6].
