The Group B Streptococcus (GBS) conjugate vaccine is a pentavalent vaccine candidate being developed by the Biovac Institute in South Africa. It targets five major GBS serotypes—Ia, Ib, II, III, and V—which are responsible for the majority of invasive GBS disease cases globally. The vaccine is constructed by covalently linking the capsular polysaccharides of these serotypes to a tetanus toxoid carrier protein, a design intended to induce a T-cell dependent immune response. This approach is specifically aimed at maternal immunization, where the resulting antibodies are transferred across the placenta to provide passive protection to newborns and young infants against invasive GBS disease. Currently in preclinical development, the vaccine is formulated with aluminum phosphate as an adjuvant and is supported by partnerships with PATH and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
