Overview

This combination therapy consists of recombinant human growth hormone (somatropin) and the synthetic anabolic steroid oxandrolone. It was evaluated in a Phase II clinical trial (NCT00004275) sponsored by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) to determine if the addition of oxandrolone to standard growth hormone therapy could further enhance linear growth and adult height in girls with Turner's syndrome. Growth hormone acts by binding to the growth hormone receptor, stimulating the production of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and promoting bone growth. Oxandrolone is a weak androgen that promotes protein synthesis and has been used as an adjunct to stimulate growth in pediatric populations. The study aimed to compare the efficacy of this combination against growth hormone alone (with placebo).
