GSK576389A is an adjuvanted, inactivated seasonal influenza vaccine candidate developed by GSK specifically for elderly adults aged 65 years and older. The vaccine was designed to address immunosenescence—the natural weakening of the immune system with age—by combining inactivated influenza virus antigens (typically from A/H1N1, A/H3N2, and B strains) with a proprietary adjuvant system to enhance the magnitude and duration of the immune response. In Phase 2 clinical trials, GSK576389A was evaluated for its safety, reactogenicity, and immunogenicity, often using the non-adjuvanted vaccine Fluarix as a reference. Although it demonstrated the ability to induce higher antibody titers in older populations compared to standard vaccines, the development of this specific formulation appears to have been discontinued in favor of other vaccine technologies.
