Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Guaifenesin + phenylephrine is a combination pharmaceutical product consisting of an expectorant and a nasal decongestant. Guaifenesin functions by increasing the volume and reducing the viscosity of secretions in the trachea and bronchi, which facilitates the removal of mucus through ciliary action and coughing. Phenylephrine is a sympathomimetic amine that acts as a selective alpha-1 adrenergic receptor agonist; it induces vasoconstriction in the nasal mucosa, thereby reducing edema and congestion. This combination is primarily indicated for the temporary relief of nasal congestion, sinus pressure, and chest congestion associated with the common cold, hay fever, or other upper respiratory allergies. It is widely available over-the-counter in various oral formulations, including immediate-release and extended-release tablets, capsules, and liquids.
