Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) combination formula consisting of the classical "Gualou-Xiebai-Banxia decoction" (GXBD) and "Hongqu" (Red Yeast Rice). GXBD is composed of four main herbal ingredients—Trichosanthis Fructus (Gualou), Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus (Xiebai), Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum (Banxia), and sometimes wine. It has been used historically for cardiovascular diseases such as coronary heart disease, chest pain syndromes, atherosclerosis, and dyslipidemia[1][2][3][5]. The addition of Hongqu introduces Monascus-fermented rice known for its lipid-lowering properties due to natural statins like monacolin K. Mechanistically, GXBD exerts cardioprotective effects by reducing oxidative stress and apoptosis in endothelial progenitor cells via activation of PI3K/Akt/eNOS signaling pathways[1], as well as ALDH2 activation to suppress cardiac apoptosis after myocardial infarction[4]. The combination with Hongqu may enhance lipid regulation through inhibition of HMG-CoA reductase. This multi-herb formula acts on multiple targets relevant to cardiovascular health.
