Guanosine-5'-triphosphate (GTP) is a purine nucleoside triphosphate composed of the nucleobase guanine attached to a ribose sugar, which is further linked to three phosphate groups at the 5' position. It serves as an essential building block for RNA synthesis during transcription and acts as an energy source or activator in various metabolic reactions, similar to ATP but with more specific roles. GTP is crucial in protein synthesis, gluconeogenesis, and especially signal transduction via G-proteins in second-messenger systems where it is hydrolyzed by GTPases to GDP.
