Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Gynostemma + prednisone is a combination pharmaceutical product consisting of gypenosides (saponins extracted from the traditional Chinese medicinal herb *Gynostemma pentaphyllum*) and the synthetic corticosteroid prednisone. Developed by the Shaanxi Ankang Medicinal Plant Development Research Institute, this combination is primarily being investigated for the treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The gypenoside component is believed to exert anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, potentially through the regulation of autophagy via the Sirt1/AMPK/mTOR signaling pathway. Prednisone serves as a potent glucocorticoid receptor agonist, suppressing the overactive immune response characteristic of SLE. The drug is currently in Phase II clinical development in China, where it is being evaluated for its ability to reduce disease activity as measured by the SLEDAI score compared to prednisone monotherapy.
