H3N2c vaccine + MF59 is an investigational adjuvanted, cell-culture-derived monovalent influenza vaccine candidate. It consists of the hemagglutinin (HA) antigen from an H3N2 strain of Influenza A virus, produced using mammalian cell culture technology (typically MDCK cells), combined with the MF59 adjuvant. The 'c' designation indicates that the vaccine is cell-derived, a process that avoids the egg-adaptive mutations common in traditional egg-based manufacturing, which can lead to antigenic mismatch and reduced vaccine effectiveness for H3N2 strains. MF59 is a squalene-based oil-in-water emulsion adjuvant that enhances the magnitude and breadth of the immune response by creating a local immunocompetent environment and promoting the recruitment of antigen-presenting cells. This combination has been evaluated in clinical trials to assess its immunogenicity and safety, particularly in older adults who may benefit from the enhanced immune stimulation provided by the adjuvant.
