Overview

A monovalent, cell culture-derived, inactivated subunit influenza vaccine developed by Novartis Vaccines to target the H3N2 variant (H3N2v) virus. This swine-origin influenza virus has been associated with human infections, particularly following exposure to pigs. The vaccine contains inactivated surface antigens, specifically hemagglutinin, and was evaluated in a Phase I dose-ranging study (NCT01855945) to assess safety and immunogenicity in various age groups, including children, adults, and the elderly. It was tested in both non-adjuvanted and MF59-adjuvanted formulations, where MF59 is an oil-in-water emulsion designed to enhance the immune response by stimulating a more robust production of hemagglutination-inhibiting antibodies.
