Overview

H5N8 antigen + MF59 is an investigational monovalent inactivated influenza vaccine consisting of an H5N8 avian influenza antigen adjuvanted with MF59, a squalene-based oil-in-water emulsion. Developed under the sponsorship of the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), this vaccine is intended to provide protection against the H5N8 subtype of avian influenza, which is considered a potential pandemic threat. The MF59 adjuvant is used to enhance the immune response, particularly by increasing the production of neutralizing antibodies and potentially allowing for a reduction in the amount of antigen required per dose (dose-sparing). The vaccine is typically administered as a two-dose intramuscular regimen and has been evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials for safety and immunogenicity.
