Overview

The H7N9 influenza vaccine developed by the Butantan Institute is an inactivated, split-virus vaccine produced using egg-based technology. It is derived from the Candidate Vaccine Virus A/Shanghai/2/2013(H7N9)-PR8-(IDCDC-RG32A), which was developed by the CDC. Because the H7N9 hemagglutinin antigen is poorly immunogenic on its own, the vaccine is formulated with oil-in-water emulsion adjuvants to enhance the immune response. Specifically, it has been evaluated in clinical trials using IB160 (a squalene-based adjuvant manufactured by Butantan, similar to MF59) and SE (a stable emulsion manufactured by the Infectious Disease Research Institute). The vaccine is intended for pandemic preparedness against avian influenza A/H7N9, which has been associated with high morbidity and mortality in humans since its emergence in 2013.
