H7N9c vaccine + adjuvant refers to a combination formulation of a candidate H7N9 inactivated influenza (split or whole-virion) vaccine and an adjuvant such as AS03 (GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals), MF59 (Novartis), SWE (squalene-in-water emulsion), Alum (aluminum hydroxide), or Alum/CpG1018. The addition of adjuvant is essential for effective immunogenicity, as H7N9 vaccines alone are poorly immunogenic in humans. Adjuvants such as AS03, MF59, and SWE are oil-in-water emulsions that augment antibody and T-cell responses, enabling antigen dose sparing and improved protection compared to unadjuvanted vaccine. Alum, particularly when combined with TLR9 agonist CpG 1018, further enhances both the magnitude and Th1-bias of immune responses in preclinical models.
