Overview

The MF59-adjuvanted H9N2 influenza vaccine is an investigational pandemic preparedness vaccine developed by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). It consists of a monovalent inactivated influenza A virus antigen of the H9N2 subtype combined with MF59, a squalene-based oil-in-water emulsion adjuvant. MF59 is designed to enhance the magnitude and breadth of the immune response, particularly by promoting the recruitment of antigen-presenting cells and increasing the production of neutralizing antibodies against the viral hemagglutinin (HA) protein. This vaccine candidate is evaluated for its potential to protect against H9N2 avian influenza, a subtype considered to have significant pandemic potential due to its ability to infect humans and its widespread circulation in poultry populations.
