A virosomal vaccine candidate designed for the prevention of infections caused by the H9N2 subtype of the influenza A virus. Developed and evaluated by University Hospitals, Leicester, this vaccine utilizes virosomes—reconstituted viral envelopes containing the essential glycoproteins hemagglutinin and neuraminidase—to stimulate a protective immune response. Virosomes are non-infectious because they lack the internal genetic material of the virus, but they retain the ability to fuse with host cells and present antigens in a manner that mimics natural infection. The vaccine was studied in a Phase 1 clinical trial (NCT00415129) to assess its safety and immunogenicity across various dose levels (1.5µg to 45µg of hemagglutinin) via intramuscular administration in healthy adults, as part of pandemic preparedness efforts against the H9N2 threat.
