Overview

PedvaxHIB is a vaccine indicated for the prevention of invasive disease caused by *Haemophilus influenzae* type b in infants and children 2 to 71 months of age. It consists of a highly purified capsular polysaccharide (polyribosylribitol phosphate, PRP) from *Haemophilus influenzae* type b covalently bound to an outer membrane protein complex (OMPC) derived from *Neisseria meningitidis* serogroup B. This conjugation converts the T-independent PRP antigen into a T-dependent antigen, resulting in enhanced antibody response and immunologic memory. The vaccine stimulates the immune system to produce Hib capsule-specific antibodies that destroy the bacterial capsule, making the organism susceptible to immune clearance. Developed and manufactured by Merck Sharp & Dohme Corp., PedvaxHIB is administered intramuscularly as part of routine childhood immunization schedules.
