The Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) vaccine is a pharmaceutical drug designed to prevent infections caused by the bacterium *Haemophilus influenzae* type b. These infections can lead to severe and life-threatening illnesses such as meningitis, epiglottitis, pneumonia, bacteremia, pericarditis, and septic arthritis. The vaccine functions by stimulating the immune system to produce protective antibodies against the polyribosyl ribitol phosphate (PRP) polysaccharide capsule of the Hib bacteria. Modern Hib vaccines are conjugate vaccines, meaning the PRP polysaccharide is chemically linked to a protein carrier (such as tetanus toxoid, diphtheria toxoid, or meningococcal outer membrane protein). This conjugation enhances the immune response, particularly in infants and young children, by promoting T-cell recruitment and the formation of memory B cells, leading to more robust and long-lasting immunity. The widespread implementation of the Hib vaccine has dramatically reduced the global incidence of invasive Hib diseases.
